In early spring, before the roses leaf out properly, I stand in the garden longer than I need to. The canes look bare. The soil is cool if you press your fingers into it. There is a pause where nothing obvious is happening, and yet everything is about to.
Roses are heavy feeders. To have healthy, floriferous plants, you need to feed them. That is the plain advice. But when I hear that phrase, I soften it in my head.
Roses love to grow.
They are insatiable bloomers as long as they are getting what they need. Nutrient rich soil. Plenty of water. Plenty of sun. Soil that smells alive when you turn it over. Fertilizer is a vital piece of the puzzle. It is not the whole story.
When should we start fertilizing roses. In early spring, once they have started to leaf out and have a few inches of new growth. I wait until I see that movement. Until the plant reenters a growth period. Fertilizing too early in spring can cause root burn if the plant is not actively growing yet. The stress of over fertilizing can make it more vulnerable to pest and disease damage. I have learned to let the rose show me when it is ready.
For newly planted roses, too much too soon can do more harm than good. Young roses need less fertilizer than established ones. At planting time, I work well rotted compost or manure into the soil and sometimes add a handful of slow release fertilizer. A bit of bone meal at planting time will help with strong root development. Then I leave it alone.
For the first month, do not fertilize at all. Water deeply, not frequently. You want the water to move down, sending the roots downward and anchoring the shrub. That instruction feels almost human. Go deep. Not fast.
After about a month, once I see new growth, I use a mild fertilizer such as fish emulsion or a gentle slow release formula diluted to half strength. Repeat every three to four weeks through the first spring and summer. Stop about six to eight weeks before your first frost so you are not encouraging tender new growth that cold will damage.
Established roses depend on bloom habit. Most modern varieties are repeat bloomers. Many Old Garden roses, some climbers and ramblers bloom once in late spring. The plant rhythm matters more than any rigid calendar.
For established repeat blooming roses, begin in early spring once you see a few inches of new growth. The first application can be a high nitrogen formula to boost growth above ground. Nitrogen helps foliage. Phosphorus supports root growth and good blooms. Potassium supports overall plant health. Up, down, and all around.
After the first application, switch to a balanced formula such as 10 10 10 or 4 4 4. Some gardeners use a bloom booster in mid season, slightly higher in phosphorus and potassium, especially between flowering flushes. Fertilize after the first flush at the same time you deadhead the plant. From there, repeat every two to three weeks during active growth if you want another round of flowers.
Apply slow release fertilizer around the drip line of the shrub, out to the width of the canopy. The drip line is the outer edge of the canopy, where rain would fall from the leaves. That is typically how far the roots extend. Spread it evenly. Water thoroughly after applying granular formulas so the nutrients move down into the root system and do not burn the roots.
Toward the end of summer, transition to a fertilizer with low nitrogen and higher phosphorus. This promotes root growth and prepares the plant for dormancy. Nitrogen encourages green growth, and late growth is easily damaged by cold snaps. At some point, you have to let the rose slow down.
For once blooming roses, including Old Garden roses, some climbers and ramblers, that early spring feeding is the most important. Use a balanced formula such as 10 10 10 once new growth appears. After bloom, you can give one more application to support roots and foliage for the rest of the growing season. They do not need to be pushed. They have already given everything at once.
There is also the practice of feeding the soil, not just the plant. Compost. Seaweed extract. Lava meal. Alfalfa meal. These amendments feed the microorganisms that feed the soil. Alfalfa contains nitrogen and other micronutrients such as manganese, sodium, iron, zinc, and copper. It is a nitrogen fixer. The nitrogen becomes available when the plant needs it rather than washing away quickly.
Some gardeners brew alfalfa tea by soaking pellets in water and using the liquid to water roses. It works. I have done it on quiet afternoons when I felt patient enough to stir a bucket. More often, I sprinkle alfalfa meal around the base, work it into the soil with a hand spade, and water thoroughly. It feels simpler.
Mulching is part of feeding too. Apply a five to ten centimeter thick layer of mulch around the base of the rose, spreading it to the outer edge of the canopy. Leave a small gap around the stems to prevent moisture related issues. Mulch retains moisture, regulates soil temperature, suppresses weeds, and improves soil structure as it breaks down.
And one more job for more blooms is deadheading. After a flower fades, the plant begins to set seed. When we deadhead, we redirect that energy from seed formation to opening new buds. Cut the stem holding the old bloom down to the next set of leaves. If you do this regularly on repeat bloomers, you encourage another flush.
I stop deadheading toward the end of the season. I let the last flowers form rosehips. I leave some for the birds over winter. I harvest a few for tea. Allowing that final cycle to complete feels right.
Feed with intention. Water deeply. Stop in time for dormancy.
Roses return.
